This may change from time to time, but this is a basic run down of the way politics work in Erepublik.
General Elections
General Elections occur the first of each month, and decide both the Presidential position for the term as well as the Congressional division amongst the parties.
Presidential Elections
Presidents are elected once a month. It is the most important position in a country in Erepublik as it has access to the treasury and all monetary policy (taxes, import/export, military pacts which are more or less monetary decisions, etc). It is imperative that all citizens vote during these elections based on who they believe is the best candidate rather than party affiliations. Many of the past candidates were simply there because of the flaws that dont allow you to withdraw, which I will explain a bit later. Only the Party Presidents from the five largest parties can run for President of a country.
Congressional Elections
There are 40 Congressman (and women) in each country. Who gets these positions depends on two factors:
1. The percentage of votes each party gets during the elections. When you vote for Congress, it will ask which party you support, not each candidate as they do not identify with that many different people.
2. Party positioning: Within each party, the President of that party has the power to move people up or down in the ranks of the party. If that party got 20% of the vote for Congress, that means that the party gets 8 seats in Congress. That then translates into the Party President (unless he becomes President) and the top 7 members of the party then become Congressman (and women).
The job that Congress is given through the technical side of Erepublik is to vote on proposals made by the President of that country. These include proposals for taxes, citizen fees, and war. Through the human side, the Congress can be given other powers through things like the adoption of a constitution such as voting for alliances and whatnot. These are the more intricate aspects of the game.
Party Elections
When you join a political party, it gives you the option to "stand for party elections". This means that in the next election for Party President you want to be a candidate, and people can vote for you. These elections occur the tenth of each month and the term will run until the next election has finished (midnight of the 11th). Party Presidents have the ability to write "Press Releases", organize, rename, and re-align parties, and it's members.
Advice: Do not stand for elections if you have no desire to run the party or any ideas or thoughts as to how. It is suggested that you wait until you fully understand the workings of Erepublik. Of course, no one will pursuade you otherwise but you'll be asked things such as what your platforms are, what your goals are for the party, and if you want to become President.
Local Elections
Local elections for mayors are held the 20th of each month. Mayors have the control over the local treasury, and the tax rates for commerce and housing. Mayors are also the only citizens that can purchase hospitals for a region.
To be nominated for local elections, you need to contact your Party President and they in turn put you up for them. If there's more than one candidate in your party for that city, you'll have to either convince your Party President why you should be Mayor, switch parties, or not run.
